TEXAS TECH 86, COLORADO 85 (OT)
LUBBOCK, Tex. – Jazmaine Lewis hit a jumper with 31 seconds to go in overtime, and Texas Tech held on as Colorado missed two shots in the final 15 seconds to earn a hard-fought victory in the 2022 Preseason WNIT.
The Lady Raiders (2-1) trailed in overtime 83-80 but took a one-point lead thanks to a jumper from Rhyle McKinney and two free throws from Bailey Maupin. Quay Miller put the Buffaloes (3-1) up 85-84 on two free throws with 50 seconds left, setting up Lewis’ heroics.
Colorado had a 77-73 lead with two minutes to go in regulation; Lewis made a shot at 1:03 to draw closer and added a free throw to cut CU’s lead to 79-78 with 18 seconds left. Jaylyn Sherrod hit a free throw for Colorado, and McKinney tied the game with two free throws with 13 seconds to go.
Bryn Gerlich pulled Texas Tech back into a tie in the third quarter with a shot to make it 41-all with 7:35 to go, but Colorado countered quickly with a 3-pointer from Sherrod nine seconds later. The Lady Raiders kept coming and got in the lead with a 3-pointer from Bailey Maupin at the 5:47 mark to make it 47-46 –Miller, Frida Formann and Sherrod all hit 3-pointers late in the frame, and the Buffs had a 62-58 lead heading into the final 10 minutes.
Texas Tech made 36 of 41 free-throw attempts and got 22 points from McKinney. Maupin scored 20 points, and Bre’Amber Scott saw the court for the first time this season and added 14 points. Lewis had 11 points and Gerlich added 10 points.
For Colorado, Miller wrapped up with 24 points, 12 rebounds and five steals. Sherrod scored 21 points and Formann added 12 points.
The Preseason WNIT concludes Sunday when Texas Tech plays at Louisiana.
