CHARLOTTE, NC — Jasmine Dickey and Tyi Skinner each scored 22 points for Delaware, and the Blue Hens scored 25 points in the fourth quarter to ease past Villanova, 77-70, and win the championship game of the Charlotte Regional at the 2021 Postseason WNIT.
Delaware (24-4) will play Rice in one of the semifinals on Friday, March 26, at 4 p.m. CT.
In a close game through three quarters, Ty Battle hit a key jumper for Delaware, making it 65-58 with 3:41 to go and wrapping up a 6-0 scoring run.
The lead was cut to 65-60 on two free throws by Villanova's Bella Runyan at the 2:48 mark, and then Skinner added two free throws and a conventional 3-point play to make it 70-62 with 1:58 remaining.
Villanova (17-7) took a hit to its comeback hopes when leading scorer Maddie Siegrist fouled out with 3:32 to go.
Battle added 17 points and 14 rebounds for the Blue Hens, who were 22-for-27 from the free-throw line and shot just 39 percent from the field.
Siegrist closed with 15 points and seven rebounds. Brianna Herlihy added 15 points, Sarah Mortensen and Runyon each scored 12 points, and Lior Garzon closed with 10 points. The Wildcats had 14 turnovers, shot 42 percent from the field and were just 5-for-23 from long range.
